Friends of Netherton Park are celebrating after it was
awarded a prestigious Green Flag The award scheme recognises the best green spaces in the country with the honour presented after judges visited and rated its signage, conservation, planting, toilets, activities and pathways. The outdoor gym, increased visitor numbers and the park ranger service also impressed judges, who also awarded the flag to Silver Jubilee Park in Coseley and The Leasowes in Halesowen. Councillor Tracy Wood, cabinet member for environment and culture said: "Dudley Council takes grate pride in offering fantastic green spaces and we know that our residents value them highly. "Achieving Green Flag status reflects the fantastic work that our park rangers, countryside wardens, friends groups, volunteers and residents have put into making our green spaces shine and I'm grateful to everyone who has played a part in it." |

Police investigate mystery images found in park |
|
Mysterious drawings of people and symbols stuffed into empty mustard oil bottles have been found in a Black Country park in a bizarre series of events over recent weeks, residents claimed today. |
People living near Netherton Park in Dudley say the
bottles of oil are being emptied over the trees, leaving stains, and left
upside down at the base with the drawings rolled up inside in what has been
suggested is some kind of mystic ritual. Police today confirmed they had received a number of reports of the strange incidents. Resident Gordon Smith, who lives in Greaves Road which runs alongside the park, said he was baffled. “This has been going on for several months,” he said. “There is usually a rolled up diagram, that depicts a human figure together with various signs and symbols, either inside the bottles or else placed near to the bottles at the bases of the trees. “The behaviour, that takes place either late at night or in the early hours of the morning, is leaving ugly stains on the trees and, as yet, no-one knows what the effect of the oil could have on the health of the trees. We are also worried that the glass bottles could be broken on the paths. “It has been suggested by various people who have done some research that it is an old superstition connected with Indian ancestry, perhaps connected to ‘healing magic’ for someone with a heart complaint, but we don’t know for sure.” Sgt Jenson Bloomer, from the Netherton, Woodside and St Andrews neighbourhood policing team, said officers were aware of the situation and were investigating. “Regular patrols are being carried out in the park area,” he said. * Can you solve the mystery? Thousands flocked to a free fun day at a Black Country
park featuring displays and a selection of stalls. Organisers of the annual Netherton Park Fun Day said more than 3000 people had enjoyed Saturday's event. Visitors watched performances by the Pedmore Panthers cheerleading squad and looked around a display of army vehicles and kit provided by Dudley's Territorial Army. Members of the Black Country Classic Car Club were also on hand to exhibit vehicles and answer questions. There was also a performance of Morris dancing. West Midlands Police manned a stall to provide residents with crime-prevention advice. The event is held every year by the Friends of Netherton Park to raise awareness of the site. Organiser Richard Johnson said: "Some people say they were not aware the park was here. This is why we hold events like the fun day to ensure people do know about it, and make use of it." "This year's event has been an enormous success and we have had thousands of people through the gates." |

Netherton Fun Day Nets Police Grant |
|
Police community support officers Simon Verity and Julie Pressdee present a £3,000 cheque to friends secretary Richard Johnson. |
Friends of Netherton Park have snapped up a £3,000 gift from Dudley police to boost their annual fun day. The cash will go towards booking attractions for the event, which will be held on Saturday July.10. Netherton neighbourhood policing team applied for the funding from the Police Property Act Fund, generated from the sale of stolen property which has been recovered but the owners of which cannot be traced and used to support voluntary and community groups. Fun day organisers have planned for archery, mini quad bikes and a bouncy castle along with more than 50 stalls and displays. A live stage will showcase local bands and dance troupes. Friends secretary Richard Johnson said: “We are very grateful to the police for the funding. The annual fun day is a great event for the local community, getting everyone involved and raising money for charity. “It is also a wonderful opportunity for local talent to perform in front of a large audience.” The Friends of Netherton Park raise funds to maintain and raise the profile of the park, helping to encourage the public to make more use of it. Police Community Support Officer Simon Verity added: “We are very pleased to support the Friends of Netherton Park. The more the park is used, the less crime we see.” The Friends of Netherton Park are also asking for more stallholders to contribute to the fun day. |

AN outdoor gym has been installed in Netherton Park in the latest of a series of keep-fit playgrounds for children and adults around the borough. The development - with equipment including a treadmill, fitness bikes and cross trainers - is part of Dudley’s £4.5million healthy towns project designed to tackle childhood obesity. Residents are invited to attend a free demonstration on how to use the gym equipment on Monday April 12 from 10am until 11am, on Thursday April 22 from 1.30pm until 2.30pm and on Wednesday April 28 from 5.30pm until 6.30pm. Free sessions on the gym at the Dell Stadium, Pensnett, are also being held on Friday April 16 from 10am until 11am, on Tuesday April 20 from 1.30pm until 2.30pm and on Wednesday April 21 from 5.30pm until 6.30pm. John Millar director of the urban environment said people were already using the gym equipment across the borough, but the sessions were being provided for anyone who wanted extra guidance. “The new equipment is very easy to use and is suitable for people of all ages and abilities,” he added. The outdoor gyms will form part of special family healthy hubs which are being developed at the sites to encourage families to take on more exercise and make the most of the borough’s outdoor spaces. Healthy hub buildings will be developed over the summer and park rangers, who will organise and lead a number of family sessions in the parks are currently being recruited. |

Conker tree tribute for Netherton man | |
Friends and family of a conker mad resident gathered
to plant a tree in his memory.
The Friends of Netherton Park purchased a Horse Chestnut tree in memory of 75-year-old group member Ken Pritchard, who died earlier this year. Throughout his life, Ken's aim was to get conker trees planted in Netherton, so children from the area would have somewhere to go to collect conkers and play the old fashioned sport. Unfortunately, Ken who also worked tirelessly for Ebenezer Baptist Church and the youth groups in the area, did not fulfil his ambition in his lifetime but as a tribute to him, the Friends planted a memorial tree at a special ceremony in Netherton Park. Geoff Johnson, acting chairman of Friends of Netherton Park, said: "The event went extremely well. Around 30 people joined us to remember Ken and the Children's Centre provided hot drinks and cakes. "We have also paid for a special plaque which has been planted at the base of the tree and we have attached a laminated sheet which tells visitors about Ken's ambition and the background to the tree."

Working in conjunction with the Friends of Netherton Park, the council’s nature conservation officers have picked out special bat boxes for the park, which will provide alternative shelter for the twilight animals. The Friends made a plea for the bat boxes after new lighting was installed on the park’s new games area. My fling must bee a record By ANDREW PARKER A WOMAN deputy mayor joined Britain’s sports stars in the hail of fame yesterday after setting a world record for throwing a FRISBEE. Sporty Pat Martin, who is in her 60s, flung a mini-disc version 22½ yards on her first attempt at a fete. A stall was offering the chance to have a go at various world and British titles and Pat cracked the over-55s category. Pat, who was a good swimmer and athlete when younger and has a 15 golf handicap, was told later her record had been verified by the World Flying Disc Federation in America. The deputy mayor, a councillor in Dudley, West Midlands, said: “I used to throw the discus at school but had never picked up a Frisbee. All my friends think it is a hoot.” |

Dan Willets with his dad, world record setter Phil. Inset: Councillor Martin sets a record at Netherton Park Fun Day | Frisbee records set at fun day An action-packed fun day in Netherton saw six Frisbee throwing records broken including one by Dudley’s deputy mayor. The record-breaking Park Fun Day took place at the Netherton Disc Golf Club. The fun day took place in July, but the World Flying Disc Federation has only recently verified the records - four of which were world beating and two of which were British records. Seventeen people attempted to set records and Councillor Pat Martin, Dudley’s deputy mayor succeeded when she threw her Frisbee 20.55m, a world record. Sporty Councillor Martin said she had always enjoyed athletics at school and has promised to return next year to try to beat her record, perhaps better equipped. “I was certainly not dressed for it,” she said. “I was wearing my ceremonial chain for a start which was a bit of a hindrance. Proud “I am very proud as deputy mayor of Dudley to be the first to hold a verifiable world record at Frisbee throwing. “When I attend the fun day next year I would hope that I would once again take up the challenge and throw even further. I must keep practising over the year.” Other record setters include 10-year-old Kayleigh Pomfret, whose 26.25m throw was also a world record and Jordan Bridgwater, also 10, whose 30.8m was a British record. Mervyn Willetts, aged 56, set a British a record by throwing 30.8m but by far the longest throw on the day was by Phil Willets, 42, whose 107.25m set a world record. Jamie Bennett had the smallest throw, but his 15.21m still set a world record as he is aged just four. The records are listed at www.wfdf.org/index.php?page= records/index.htm - under the main heading ‘Distance’ and sub heading ‘Mini Disc Distance.’ |

The shaded zone is based in Netherton Park, Northfield Road, and can be used by local schools or groups for outdoor learning events and celebrations. It will be a permanent feature in the park. Netherton Park Children’s Centre worked in partnership with the Friends of the Park group, Netherton library and parents to apply for Awards for All Funding aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and outdoor activities. Organisers put together a jam-packed programme at Netherton park, off Northfield Road, on Saturday after last year’s event fell flat due to a lack of funding. And despite rain showers the scores of people who attended refused to let the weather put a dampener on things. Among the attractions on Saturday were performances from singing and dancing troupes including the Crystal Rockets, who appeared on a stage specially set up behind Netherton Arts Centre in Northfield Road. The stage was also used to showcase the talents of promising local rock bands such as Stars at Midnight. The fun day also saw the official opening of a £10,000 outdoor storytelling zone at the park. The shaded zone is now available to use for schools or groups for outdoor learning, and professional storyteller Clive Dennis Cole performed there on Saturday as it was officially launched. Organiser Richard Johnson said the event had been an overwhelming success. He said: “We wanted to bring the community of Netherton together and organise a fun day out for both young and old. “The weather didn’t help in places but it looked like everyone who came had a great time. Displays “We were delighted with the turnout and plans are in place to put something on bigger and better next year.” Other entertainment on the day included a classic cars display, a land train, army displays, family fun fair, face painting, clowns, bouncy castles, stalls and food and refreshment. |

Park Friends Rob Grainger, Geoff Johnson and George Biggins take a look at the improvements with Dudley's neighbourhood manager Keiran McMahon and landscape architect Nigel Cox. | GAME ON AS PARK CAMPAIGN PAYS OFF Netherton park campaigners can now see the results of their efforts after a new multi-use games area was unveiled. New football posts and basket hoops have now been installed at the park in Northfield Road along with new seating and a revamp of the existing play area. The Friends of Netherton Park have been the driving force behind the improvement scheme after scooping £79,485 government funding. The Friends group worked with residents to draw up a wish list for the park after Dudley Council was awarded a £3.4 million share of funding to be invested into parks across the borough. Councillor Charles Fraser Macnamara, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said the Netherton development aimed to encourage youngsters to take part in a variety of sports to keep them active and healthy. He hoped these kinds of works would help reduce problems with anti-social behaviour and help genuine park users re-claim their park. Dudley Council was one of just 27 authorities across the country selected to share a slice of £89 million through the government's Liveability Fund. |

LIVING IN FEAR -
BOTTLE FIGHTS, BURNT OUT CARS, PARKS DESTROYED
- NETHERTON'S YOB CULTURE IS TAKING OVER TOWN
Residents are crying out for yob-hotline after
years of living in fear suffering from vandalism, graffiti and antisocial
behaviour.
The
emotive issue was top of the agenda at a public meeting on Saturday
November 26 held by the Netherton Woodside Partnership.
Fed up
folk pleaded for help in setting up a direct link with police in a
desperate bid to clean up the area. Frightened homeowner Brian Drew said: "When
you ring the police switchboard you are shunted about all over the place
and nothing gets done.
"The yobs
know police action rarely comes and if it does, they just get moved on
somewhere else.
"People
shouldn't have to live in fear. "We pay for services but get nothing. "The
council will come up with plaudits but then it forgets about us its always
the way."
Bottle
fights and burnt out cars are regular occurrences at Netherton Park, where
the play area has been burnt down twice and the park base ripped up three
times.
Recently
hooligans on motorbikes raced around at 2am leaving the football pitch
ripped to shreds.
Chairman
of the park committee Ivor Lucas said: "I have lost tennis courts, a
bowling green, a putting green, a fountain and a Victorian bandstand
because of these yobs.
"I'm told if the park was used more then
this wouldn't happen but how can people go when they are frightened?
"I have
money for new equipment but I am terrified of getting anything because I
know it's going to get burnt down like everything else."
Netherton,
Woodside and St Andrew's is the third most deprived ward in Dudley.
Councillor
Mahbubur Rahman vehemently supported residents' brave bid to bring the
persistent problem to an end.
He said:
"We have always said antisocial behaviour was a problem.
"The
community needs a hotline number because action needs to be taken
urgently."
Netherton police say they are aware of the situation and are working in
conjunction with the council to sort the issue.

The new gateway, at Netherton Park, is adorned with nails, chains, an anchor and hooks made at firms throughout Cradley and Dudley. The friends of Netherton Park, which collected the items, celebrated the opening of the £10,000 gate on Tuesday. All the items have been welded on to a 10ft long archway which spans the Northfield Road entrance to the park. Friends spokesman Geoff Johnson said: “There used to be a miserable old barrier across the entrance of the park which used to put people off going in. It was not very welcoming at all. “We decided to make something much more appealing and the archway seemed the best way forward. “We added little bits of the Black Country to stamp our mark on it and let everyone know it’s the gateway to a very special part of the area welcoming everyone. “The gates look fantastic and they will be a lasting tribute to our work.” |
